Meet the Candidates: Eric Adams
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams has officially kicked off his run for mayor, joining the field of Democrats ahead of the June 2021 primary. He talks about his experience as a police officer (who founded One Hundred Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care) and how that informs his approach to criminal justice reform and crime prevention, and more, including housing and school desegregation.

Adams says he was asked by civil rights leaders to join the NYPD. Because of his skills as a computer programmer, he was one of the first to join a team to use data to fight crime.

Adams says the NYPD can perform much better. "Understanding the inner dealings of the police department is one of the most important things we can do right now," @ericadamsfornyc tells @BrianLehrer. He wants to change the demographics of the NYPD through promotion and attrition

Adams also wants community leaders to be able to interview precinct commanders, and he says there will be no tolerance for abuse - perpetrating or witnessing.

Adams says it's a national issue. He also says prosperity is crucial for public safety.
He wants to re institute the anti-crime unit and make it an anti-gun unit.
