Electronic Music - Part 2 of 3 - Electronic Abstraction

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

In this second of three shows on the history of electronic tape music up to the 1960s, Canby concentrates on what he considers to be the genre's second phase. As opposed to phase one, which is music derived from natural sounds, like Tod Dockstader's Water Music, phase two is about sounds that have no origin in the natural world and are instead created electronically via tone generator machines. The RCA Mark 1 Sound Synthesizer and the Modular Moog synthesizer are the more famous examples and Canby plays musical examples made using each machine.
