Dedicating WNYC's 2020 Time Capsule
2020 was quite a year, and everyone's personal experience of the pandemic has been different, depending on our circumstances. That's why we wanted to pack as many different perspectives as possible into WNYC's 2020 Time Capsule. The web version of the capsule will be taken down at midnight tonight, so it's your last chance to hear from 5 hours of moving listener reflections or look at some of the 780 crowdsourced photos that paint a picture of city life during the pandemic. That is, until 2030, when we hope you'll join us to crack it open and look back on the lessons of this consequential year.
Today, producer Zach Gottehrer-Cohen sealed the Time Capsule delivered it to it's semi-permanent home for the next decade: next to our station's transmitter, at the top of the Empire State Building. Hear Brian Lehrer discuss with Zach and WNYC's engineering manager Dannie Raghunath, the station's self-described "transmitter guy," about the voices inside the Time Capsule, and what it means that we're storing these testimonies from our listeners alongside the equipment that keeps WNYC on the air, no matter what.
