The California band called Death Valley Girls proves that darkness can be fun. Their latest album, Darkness Rains, mixes Bonnie Bloomgarden’s sometimes querulous vocals with sludgy guitars, squonking saxes, punk drumming and tops it all with some unexpectedly bright girl group harmonies. Punk legend Iggy Pop is a fan, and in fact stars in the video for this song, called "Disaster (Is What We’re After)." 

Death Valley Girls play a late show Thursday night, Nov. 1, at Mercury Lounge.
