Dan Savage’s Love Goes On

The New Yorker Radio Hour | Jan 13, 2017

Dan Savage started writing a sex-advice column twenty-five years ago with the intention of making fun of straight people. “Savage Love” was immediately popular, and soon what began as satire morphed into a column that tackled readers’ real questions about sex and relationships. Over the course of writing the column, Savage has had to broaden his understanding of female anatomy and trans issues. He was also forced to confront the limits of monogamy in his own marriage, leading to the controversial position he calls “monogamish.” He tells David Remnick that we sacrifice good relationships in the attempt to secure absolute faithfulness, a goal that is simply impossible for some.
