New Sounds Live / Ecstatic Music Series
Violinist Curtis Stewart is a gifted classical musician. But his parents were jazz musicians, and he says that almost everything he plays has a touch of the blues. He plays almost everything – from fiery variations on Greek folk song to medieval music to contemporary compositions, including overlooked Black composers of the past. No one knows who wrote this song, “Deep River,” but it has been a hugely popular spiritual for over a century, and Curtis Stewart, with string quartet and some of the music students at the Kaufmann Music School, performed it live in our studio. Curtis Stewart and friends play on June 1 at Kaufman Music Center's Merkin Hall for a concert that will include the Harlem String Quartet, pianist Aaron Diehl, Mazz Swift, and others.
