Light Attendance On Day One of NYC Plan for Emergency Workers' Children
As so many New York City families stay home to keep safe, health care providers, emergency responders, transit employees and others have to go to work, risking their own and their families’ health. For frontline workers who are also parents, it’s an especially challenging time.
The city has opened "Regional Enrichment Centers" to care for their children. There are 93 centers operating in schools in every district around the city, most are for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with some set aside for pre-schoolers. On the first day attendance at some centers was very light, and advocates called for other groups — including children of grocery workers and students experiencing homelessness — to be included, too.
