Citi Bike's Parent Company Changes Name

Alta Bicycle Share not only has new ownership, but a new name: Motivate.

The company was acquired last year by a New York-based investment venture. Its CEO, Jay Walder, once ran New York's MTA.

Motivate announced its name change Wednesday in a press release. According to a company spokeswoman, the renaming was required as part of the sale agreement.

Before the sale, the bike share operator was affiliated with Alta Planning and Design, a consulting firm, which is continuing to do business as a separate entity and keeping the "Alta" in its name.

Motivate operates bike share systems around the world, including Citi Bike in New York, Capital Bikeshare in D.C., and Hubway in Boston. The names of its respective bike share systems will remain the same.
