Sax player and clarinetist Charlie Gabriel has waited a long time to release his first album as a solo recording artist. This summer, he’ll put out an album called 89. Because, yes, he is 89. Charlie Gabriel has played with Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, and has been part of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans. His first single is this version of the old standard “I’m Confessin’,” and it features some silky clarinet playing, as well as Gabriel’s slightly weathered but still lyrical croon.
