You can call Catherine Russell a jazz singer if you want; lots of people do. But that ignores a large body of other work that she’s done over the years – like singing with David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Wynton Marsalis, and Paul Simon. Or winning a Grammy for her contribution to the soundtrack of the TV series Boardwalk Empire. But yes, she is a jazz singer, one whose repertoire stretches back to the first decades of jazz. Vocalist Catherine Russell brings her retro swing and blues songs to Birdland, from Feb. 12-16.
