Casey Stengel's 75th Birthday at City Hall

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Charles Dillon "Casey" Stengel interview with New York City Mayor Robert F. Wagner, Jr. on the occasion of his 75th birthday celebration at City Hall. Mayor Wagner announces that Friday, July 23rd, 1965 will be Casey Stengel Day. His actual birthday is July 30th.

Among sportswriters, Stengel was known as "The Old Professor" for his quick wit and verbose replies to questions - evident in this recording. He discusses his career in baseball, baseball clubs of New York, his close friendship with the mayor, and The Medicare Bill of 1965.

Mayor Wagner begins the press conference with the proclamation of Casey Stengel Day. Stengel is asked about the Mets' current season, retiring as manager and politics.
