The Year Thousands Of Canadians 'Adopted' Syrian Refugees

The Leonard Lopate Show | Apr 6, 2017

Peggy Karas discusses how she spent a year with a Syrian family that she and her friends "adopted" as part of Canada's unique refugee resettlement program. Karas and her friends donated their time and money to get the family comfortable in their new lives.  By month 13, Canadians were dealing with the challenge of letting their Syrian families go after developing relationships with them. New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Catrin Einhorn wrote about this in their recent piece, “Canadians Adopted Refugee Families For a Year. Then Came Month 13.” The two spent a year reporting on the program, and Kantor joins us to share what she learned.

You can read Jodi Kantor and Catrin Einhorn's four-part series about Canada's refugee resettlement program "Refugees Welcome" here.

One U.S. based program that supports refugees, mentioned in the interview is Iris. You can find out more about Iris here.
