Bronx High School of Science Teacher Arrested on Child Pornography Charges

SchoolBook | Mar 6, 2015

Federal authorities have charged a Bronx high school teacher with producing, receiving, and possessing child pornography.

Jon Cruz, who worked at the Bronx High School of Science, was arrested at home Friday morning. Authorities say he chatted with minors from different states online and asked them to send him sexually explicit photographs.

He began working at the school in 2006, and taught advanced placement courses in U.S. Government, Politics, and Economics at the school. He also served as a faculty advisor to the school's Gay-Straight Alliance and coached the Speech and Debate team.

In a statement, the Department of Education called the allegations against Cruz "deeply disturbing and saddening." The department confirmed that Cruz has been removed from the classroom and is no longer in contact with students.
