Babette Deutsch Introduces May Swenson

The NYPR Archive Collections | Jan 1, 2000

Babette Deutsch introduces a young May Swenson at the beginning of her literary career. Selections from her work "Another Animal" appear in the book, "Poets of Today".

Deutsch describes Swenson as a "kindred spirit" who lives "the life of an office worker 9 to 5 and the life of a poet 5 to 9." Deutsch describes her successes and praises her "gift for metaphor" and "thoughtful poetry."
Deutsch tells us that in an unusual move for a radio poetry reading, she will ask Swenson to read her poems twice.
