Author Christiane Bird Captures a New York City Block in Time

A new book tells the history of New York City through the story of one city block, from Twenty-third Street to the south, Twenty-fourth Street to the north, Fifth Avenue and Broadway to the east, and Sixth Avenue to the west. Christiane Bird's book A Block in Time: A New York City History at the Corner of Fifth Avenue and Twenty-Third Street, tells the story of this neighborhood from the original Lenape inhabitants through the life of a formerly enslaved person turned-property owner, through the Gilded Age construction, and all the way to present day.
