The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra has kept alive the tradition of Latin Jazz started, largely here in New York, back in the mid 20th century. Under the leadership of pianist Arturo O’Farrill, the ALJO has extended that tradition by using things like turntables and incorporating political messages about immigration and the like. Arturo O’Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra celebrates the 40th anniversary of the beloved East Harlem Bomba y Plena ensemble Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21), and the two big bands play together for a not-to-be-missed holiday musical extravaganza at the Hostos Center in The Bronx on Dec. 2.
