Are You Ready for New York's Big Art Fair Weekend?

WNYC News | May 4, 2018

This weekend is one of New York’s busiest for gallery art fairs.

Hundreds of galleries are set to showcase artwork at seven events throughout the city, including the massive Frieze Art Show on Randalls Island and the TEFAF New York Spring show at the Park Avenue Armory in Manhattan.

WNYC art critic Deborah Solomon says the shows are great for getting "a lot of art out there in the world. But it can be a challenge to take in the sheer amount of work on view."

"The question becomes: How can we have a meaningful experience with a work of art?" she said. "And if we're jogging through a fair, inevitably we're going to get less out of the experience than if we go to a museum and look at one painting."

If you’re up for the weekend art marathon, here are the details on the shows to see. And don’t forget this advice from Solomon: "If you go, wear sneakers."
