Andy Statman Trio at Barbès (Livestream Only)
Wed., Jan. 5. 8PM. $20 Recommended Donation
Andy Statman first made a name for himself in the 70s, as a leading mandolinist on the bluegrass scene, or to be more specific, the alternative scene known as newgrass. But in the 80s, he became an influential figure in the revival of klezmer music - Jewish soul music, as it's sometimes known - and for that, he unveiled his equally virtuosic clarinet playing. Since then, Statman has woven strands of jazz, folk, and old Hassidic music into his playing. Here's his arrangement of a niggun, a wordless song of prayer from the Hassidic tradition: "Modzitzer Deveykus Niggun." Clarinetist (and sometimes mandolinist) Andy Statman and his trio play a livestreamed show on Wed. night, Jan. 5 at the club Barbès in Brooklyn.
