In the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, during the 1960’s and ‘70s, the sounds of American jazz and James Brown-style funk combined with Ethiopia’s own exotic scales to produce a golden age of Ethiopian pop. The New York-based group called Anbessa Orchestra has fallen under the spell of that long ago scene, and they recreate those loping grooves, buoyant brass lines, moody organ, and funky guitar of the style that’s come to be known as Ethiojazz. Anbessa Orchestra plays Aug. 22 at Barbès.
