Summer Travel Tips, 'Mr. Malcolm's List,' Jeremy Allen White of 'The Bear,' Monster Makeup with Barrie Gower, Exploring K-Pop in NYC
For many of us, summer means travel, and with most COVID restrictions across the country and around the world lifted, travelers are looking to make up for lost time in planning their vacations. But with inflation hitting the cost of airfare, gas, and more, travelers looking for an affordable, enjoyable getaway might have to reformulate their plans. Jacqui Gifford, editor in chief of Travel + Leisure, joins us to discuss her latest travel plans and tips for destinations off the beaten path.
The script for "Mr. Malcolm's List" sat on the Hollywood Black List before being picked up by director Emma Holly Jones, who developed the script into a short film before getting the green light for a feature. The film, set in Regency-era England, tells the story of a particularly picky eligible bachelor, and a woman who was scorned by him who becomes bent on revenge. We're joined by Jones, actor and executive producer Freida Pinto (who plays love interest Selina) and actor Zawe Ashton (who plays schemer Julia). "Mr. Malcolm's List" is playing now in theaters everywhere.
According to the Ringer, FX's "The Bear" is "the surprise hit of the summer." The show stars Jeremy Allen White as a chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to take over his family's sandwich shop. White, who is also known for his role in Showtime's "Shameless," joins us.
Barrie Gower is a prosthetic make-up designer, whose work you've seen in "Game of Thrones," "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," "Chernobyl," and most recently, "Stranger Things," for which he created the grotesque look of the fourth season villain, Vecna. Gower joins us to explain how he makes up monsters and more.
Korean pop culture is increasingly popular around the world, and two free concerts coming to Manhattan in July showcase a wide range of contemporary Korean music. The Korea Gayoje, coming to Central Park's SummerStage on Sunday, July 10, focuses on K-pop, and will feature girl group Brave Girls, boy band Golden Child, and solo artist AleXa. K-Indie Music Night, coming to Damrosch Park on July 27th, will showcase two indie rock bands: Jannabi and Byebyesea. Mickey Hyun and Hyo Han from the Korean Cultural Center of New York, which organized these concerts, as well as Tamar Herman, a senior reporter covering culture for the South China Morning Post, join us to dive into the artists performing and the broader popularity of Korean culture in New York.
