'Slave Play,' A Look At 'King Richard,' Previewing HBO Max's 'Station Eleven,' COVID On TV Shows, Remembering bell hooks
[REBROADCAST] Playwright Jeremy O. Harris' "Slave Play" is now playing at Broadway's August Wilson Theatre. He and actors Annie McNamara and Sullivan Jones joined us before the pandemic to discuss the poignant play about interracial relationships when it was still off-Broadway at the New York Theater workshop. O. Harris also joined us this past March, around the 1-year anniversary of Broadway's lockdown, to discuss the theater community's challenging year, and making space for Black theater on Broadway going forward.
The new film “King Richard” is receiving acclaim and Oscars buzz for Will Smith’s performance as Richard Williams, the father and first coach of Venus and Serena Williams. Screenwriter Zach Baylin joins us to discuss the film, his first feature, which was featured in the second slot in the 2018 Black List. “King Richard” is in theaters now and streaming on HBO Max.
The new HBO Max series "Station Eleven," an adaptation of the acclaimed Emily St. John Mandel novel of the same name, has already been declared one of the best shows of the year by The New York Times, Vulture, and Rolling Stone, even though it hasn't yet premiered. Creator Patrick Somerville and star Mackenzie Davis join us to discuss the series, which follows a woman who joins a traveling Shakespeare company after a deadly pandemic dramatically alters the world as we know it. The first episode premieres tonight on HBO Max.
