In 1945, the pianist Mary Lou Williams recorded her Zodiac Suite – twelve works, one for each sign of the zodiac, and each part of the suite was a portrait of one of her friends. So "Aries," for example, was a portrait of Billie Holiday, while the piece, "Taurus," was a portrait of Duke Ellington. Now pianist Aaron Diehl is going to revive this intriguing blend of jazz history and astrological hooey. It’s part of a whole program that he’s doing of composed works in a jazzy style for the DACAMERA series online.
