Nightclub 'Pope of the Rope' Remembered

WNYC News | Jul 13, 2010

A memorial service will be held tonight at Manhattan's Hiro Ballroom for Gilbert Stafford, a well-known doorman at some of New York City's most popular nightclubs. He died of cancer on New Years Day.

Stafford was known by many as the "Pope of the Rope" -- the ultimate judge of who was dapper enough to gain entry, and who would have to try their luck another night. He manned the velvet rope for about two decades at clubs like Area, Nell's, and Crobar before moving to Miami to do the same. There are also memorials being held in Miami and Los Angeles.
