Political Action on Martin Luther King Junior Day

In Newark, Acting Governor Richard Codey said today's holiday is more than just one day of rememberance of Doctor King. Codey said it was a call to action and service. At the Saint James AME church, Codey recalled how, as a state assemblyman in 1977, he sponsored a bill proclaiming Martin Luther King Junior Day a state holiday.

Mayor Bloomberg talked up his record to African American audiences at several events today to honor the memory of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Junior. And many of his potential Democratic challengers were at those events, too, to counter Bloomberg's assessment with their own analysis. Bloomberg received a quarter of the black vote in 2001.

At an annual event to honor Martin Luther King, the Reverend Al Sharpton told several hundred people at a West Harlem Baptist Church that Doctor King would have spoken out against the current conflict in Iraq.
