Choir Administrators Forced From Offices

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Despite a protest by parents today, Mayor Bloomberg says a deadline is a deadline for the Harlem Boys Choir. He says the choir's administrators were forced to vacate their offices in a public school because they wouldn't cooperate with the Education Department.

BLOOMBERG: We will do whatever the law allows us to do, they are not going to occupy that space again on a full time basis, as I've said if we can work out an afternoon program there or someplace else we can do it. We're not opposed to a program. Quite the contrary we gave them a number of opportunities to fix the program and make it work.

REPORTER: The city claims financial problems and mismanagement following an alleged sexual assault are the reason why the choir's administrators were evicted. Those administrators have sued, claiming their eviction was illegal. And parents have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit, saying their children are not receiving a complete education.
