Mayor Might Support Dem in NY Senate Race

New York, NY —

Mayor Bloomberg says he might support Democrats for the New York State Senate if they would advance his agenda and help the city get more education dollars for city schools. WNYC's City Hall reprter Bob Hennely has more.

REPORTER: For years critics of Mayor Bloomberg have said he let Albany Republicans off the hook when it came to getting billions of court mandated dollars for city schools. Now that he's at the beginning of his second term, the Mayor is now making it clear--- fellow Republcans can't take his support for granted anymore.

BLOOMBERG: My priority number one is to do what is right for this city. And I am going to do that to the extent I can. I am going to look at anybody that is running and see how they have in the past or not helped this city.

REPORTER: Bloomberg aides have already been scouting out at least one potential Democratic candidate: Councilman Joseph Addabbo Jr. He's running against 9-term veteran Queens Republican Senator Serph Maltese.

The GOP has controlled the state Senate for all but one year since the 1920s and currently holds what some anaylsts believe is a vulnerable 35 to 26 majority.
