Bloomberg Not Sure Roosevelt Tram is Still Useful

The Roosevelt Island tram remains at a standstill. City and state officials say it will stay that way until crews figure out what caused tuesday's power outage and how to stop it from happening again.

REPORTER: Mayor Bloomberg says there are quicker ways to get to Roosevelt Island than by taking tram and that he's not sure if it's useful at this point.

BLOOMBERG: Trams, they give you great views, this is a good place to see the city from. Some people like heights, others don't. Usefulness, I don't now how you define that. There clearly are other ways to get to Roosevelt Island.

REPORTER: Thousands of people use the tram each day, including many students, elderly and disable people who live in the island's two hospitals. Mayor bloomberg has spoken enthusiastically about a plan to use an aerial gondola to connect Governor's Island to Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The state official appointed to run the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation says the tram is "an intimate part of the Roosevelt Island mystique,"
