Jane Jacobs, Guru of Urban Planning, Dead at 89

Jane Jacobs, the author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities died today at he age of 89 in Toronto.

Her publicist at Random House did not give a cause of death. Jacobs lived in New York City for many years before moving to Canada in the 1960's in part to protest the war in Vietnam.

Jacobs most famous book became a classic that was referenced by urban planners and taught in schools. The premise was that cities should be integrated, manageable communities with a diversity of people, transportation, architecture and commerce.
