New Jersey Attorney General Resigns
New York, NY —
The woman who will succeed New Jersey Attorney General Zulima Farber on an interim basis is a 35-year-old former federal prosecutor who oversees several divisions within the department. Anne Milgram will take over the position on September 1. Farber resigned after just six months on the job. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more on the violation that caused her to step down.
It all started as a mundane traffic stop to boost seat belt use in Fairview leading up to Memorial Day. Local police had pulled over Hamlet Goore, who also happened to be the long time live-in companion of the Attorney General Zulima Farber. At issue were a number of things: Farber's arrival at the scene, police officers' attempt to void tickets they had issued Farber's boyfriend, and their call to let him drive away despite the fact his vehicle was unregistered. For Farber the final straw came with the findings yesterday by a special prosecutor that her actions had violated three state ethics standards. Farber's resignation is effective the end of the month. Governor Corzine has not yet named.a successor. The independent prosecutor called for a 14 day suspension without pay for the local officers and the state trooper involved.
