One Company Fries its Way to Energy Independence on Long Island

Running cars on frying oil has taken a big step forward on Long Island.

North American Bio-Fuels of Bohemia has opened the first plant on Long Island that converts restaurant grease and frying oil into fuel for the car. It works best in diesel engine cars but can also be used in gasoline engines that install a converter.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy says the bio-fuel not only creates a market for the waste oil many restaurants have been dumping illegally, it's also an opportunity to lessen dependence on foreign oil.

American Bio-Fuel CEO David Butler says the Long Island plant is selling about one thousand gallons of the Bio-Diesel a day and he hopes to increase production with other plants to 50,000 gallons per day. He also says the company will be producing a bio-diesel home heating oil this winter.
