Republican Concerns Over Spitzer's Reforms

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

As part of his promised effort to change the culture in Albany, Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer promises he'll refuse many campaign donations from unions and special interests. He also says people interested in working for his administration will not be asked which political party they belong to.

REPORTER: And Spitzer says unlike his predecessor, he won't be doing any TV commercials for New York's tourist attractions or health programs. Spitzer doesn't have the authority to make legislators follow his lead, but he hopes they'll do so anyway. But, Republican Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno didn't seem likely to acquiesce.

BRUNO: For anyone that thinks that anyone that makes a contribution buys anything other than indicating their positive support... well then they're just wrong.

REPORTER: Bruno says the Senate will enact some kind of campaign finance reforms next year, but did not specify what.
