NJ Transit Rolls Out Multilevel Trains

A new era begins today for train commuters. NJ Transit's first multilevel train car will run from Trenton to New York at noon. It'll carry Governor Corzine and Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez.
Today's run is the start of a 2-year effort that will result in 234 of the double-decker cars in use. The cars offer more seats, more leg room and none of these maligned middle seats that are the bane of daily commuters. Instead, each row will contain 2 seats.
Only commuters on the Northeast Corridor line will get to try out the cars on 1 train over the next few months. More trains will appear next spring on other lines. Beginning next summer, NJ Transit will take delivery of 10 cars per month, enough to assemble one long train per month.
