New Jersey Lawmakers Fund Stem Cell Research

The New Jersey Legislature will invest in stem cell research. Lawmakers have agreed to borrow $270 million to build research labs, start a cord blood collection program and fund cancer research.

The proposal allows the state to tap into its unused bonding capacity. It was approved by the Assembly in a 53 to 24 vote, with 3 abstentions. The Senate voted unanimously in favor of the proposal. Governor Corzine says he looks forward to signing the bill, calling the investment a "tremendous opportunity" for the state and its biomedical industry.
