Subway Hero Recognized in State of the Union Address

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

New York City subway hero Wesley Autrey was recognized by the president and Congress during the State of the Union address last night.

BUSH: He insists he's not a hero. He says we got guys and girls overseas dying for us to have our freedom so we have got to show each other some love. There is something wonderful about a country that produces a brave and humble man like Wesley Autrey.

REPORTER: President Bush hailed Autrey for his act of bravery 3 weeks ago in Harlem, when he saw a man fall onto the subway tracks, leapt down to help him and then kept the 2 in a space between the rails as the train passed over them. The President's comments prompted a long standing ovation from Congress.

Autrey pointed to the President and blew kisses.
