New Comptroller Criticizes Spitzer's First Budget Plan

Governor Spitzer's $120.6 billion state budget proposal would increase spending "at an unsustainable rate" and leave New York with a whopping three-year budget gap of $13 billion. This, according to the new state comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli. He says the governor’s proposal makes progress in terms of budget reform but it simply would spend too much.

Under the Spitzer budget plan, state spending would rise by almost 8%. The budget proposal is for the state fiscal year that begins April 1st, and final decisions about it rest with the state legislature.

There was no immediate comment from Spitzer on the DiNapoli report.
