Work Release Program Amended

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Governor Spitzer has issued an executive order that prevents convicted terrorists, murderers and some sex offenders from prison temporary work-release programs.

The order renews one enforced under former Governor Pataki, but expands it to cover terrorists and more sex offenders. State prisons spokeswoman Linda Foglia says that under Pataki, New York cut back sharply on the number of inmates approved for work release. There were nearly 28,000 in such programs in 1994 and only about 2,700 last year.
