Spitzer Delivers Harsh Rebuke to Senate Republicans

Spending proposals from New York lawmakers would increase Governor Spitzer's first budget by hundreds of millions of dollars, adding funds to education, hospitals and nursing homes.

REPORTER: Spitzer says the Democrat-led Assembly's proposal to increase total spending by $600 million is too much. Spitzer aimed his sharpest criticism at the Republican-led Senate.

SPITZER: The necessary part of this conversation must be a willingness to make the hard decisions to understand that our health care system must be shifted. We must do better.

REPORTER: Health care spending alone would increase by $544 million under the Senate plan. This week, Spitzer and legislative leaders will begin negotiating a state budget by the April 1st start of the fiscal year. The governor wants to redirect the state's health spending from hospitals to neighborhood clinics and at-home care.
