Religious Leaders Oppose Spitzer's Medicaid Cuts

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

A group of religious leaders has joined healthcare workers and hospitals in opposing Gov. Spitzer’s proposed Medicaid cuts.

REPORTER: Speaking outside North General Hospital in Spanish Harlem, Rev. John Scott from the Baptists Conference of Greater New York, said reducing spending on hospitals jeopardizes the health of communities.

SCOTT: We must protect these workers who are underpaid and overworked, and our patients who are under-served.

REPORTER: Spitzer has said the state spends twice as much per patient on Medicaid as the national average because too many people receive healthcare in hospitals, rather than clinics. Reverend Al Sharpton today said the question isn’t where people are served but how many services are provided to how many patients.
