Committee Formed to Investigate Auxiliary Cops

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has created a committee to assess the safety of the auxiliary police force, following last week's killing of 2 auxiliary police officers. Officers Nicholas Pekearo and Eugene Marshalik died were killed when they tried to stop a gunman who had shot to death a restaurant worker. The gunman, David Garvin, fatally shot the officers. Garvin was later killed in a gun battle with plainclothes officers.

Kelly says he is asking for the committee to report it recommendations on safety, effectiveness and professionalism of the force within 90 days.

Auxiliary officers are unpaid, unarmed volunteers. Many purchase their own bulletproof vests.
