Bill Would Move Taxis to Outer Boroughs

You might soon see more yellow cabs in the outer boroughs, if a key city councilman has his way. Yesterday, the Council discussed a bill that would set up 10 taxi stands near transit hubs in Brooklyn, Staten Island, the Bronx and Queens.

REPORTER: Councilman John Liu, the head of the Transportation Committee, says livery cabs don't meet the demand in the outer boroughs.

LIU: The fact that the administration and this city, through the TLC, has no idea to what extent illegal street hails are occurring on a daily basis. That itself is a problem and that is fundamentally the reason why nothing's being done to address the needs of so many of these New Yorkers outside the central business district.

REPORTER: But the taxi stands are not backed by the Bloomberg administration. Taxi Commissioner Matthew Daus says the $3 million proposal is too expensive. Liu says the city should use part of the $141 million in revenue it gets from medallion sales.
