Wal-Mart Still Interested in NYC

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

REPORTER: Wal-Mart says its CEO believed it wasn't worth trying to open a store in Manhattan, but he hasn't ruling out the rest of the city. A Wal-Mart spokesman says the discount superstore is still reviewing sites in the outer boroughs. Columbia Business School professor Raymond Horton says opposition to Wal-Mart comes mainly from a narrow group of people.

HORTON: It's political success of a very small number of self interested stores and union leaders who have managed to block something that most New Yorkers would love to see happen.

REPORTER: Horton says the big box stores in his Brooklyn neighborhood are always packed with shoppers, and that if New Yorkers can get a quality product for a low price, they're going to want to buy it.
