City Presents Willets Point Redevelopment Plan

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The city presented its master plan to redevelop Willets Point near Shea Stadium. The project calls for 55 hundred units of housing, a convention center and hotel, and over 2 million square feet of stores and offices.

REPORTER: But about 250 businesses will need to be relocated and some of them are resisting the plan. Jake Bono's family has run Bono Sawdust since 1933, and says it's impossible to find land zoned for industrial use.

BONO: Everybody knows that in the city of New York, there is no more land. Every piece of land is being developed. There is no undeveloped land, there is no place to put any of our businesses, so therefore we will be out of business.

REPORTER: Mayor Bloomberg says the plan will help clean up a 60-acre contaminated site and provide 20 thousand construction jobs.
