Transit Workers Mourn Colleague

Scores of transit workers wearing bright-orange service vests attended funeral services Saturday for a colleague struck by a subway train while doing track maintenance in Brooklyn.

Veteran New York City Transit employee Marvin Franklin was killed at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station last Sunday. Another worker, Daniel Boggs was killed by a number 3 train near Columbus Circle five days earlier.

Mourners at the New Covenant Church in Queens Village said his death was a reminder of the hazards of the job. Over the past six decades, more than 230 city transit workers have been killed in on-the-job accidents.

Maintenance workers are getting new training on track safety, along with radios to allow supervisors to talk to train controllers. The MTA is also considering speed restrictions in work zones.
