Flight 587 Families to Gather at Bronx Ceremony

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Relatives of those killed in the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 will attend a dedication ceremony today for two Bronx crypts.

The last remains of the victims of the 2001 crash have were placed in the crypts Friday at Woodlawn cemetery in the Bronx. Flight 587 was bound for the Dominican Republic when it went down in Belle Harbor, Queens, after taking off from Kennedy International Airport.

The bodies of all 265 crash victims were identified long ago. But the medical examiner's office was left with more than 800 bone shards and other tiny body parts that were either unidentified or unclaimed. Those remains now lie in the four caskets entombed Friday.

The cemetery space was purchased by New York City, which has for years been trying to solve the issue of where the final remains should rest.
