Change of address on the upper east side

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The United States Postal Service is giving Upper East Side residents a whole new meaning of the phrase, "there goes the neighborhood."

REPORTER: Starting July 1st, the prestigious 10021 zip code will be split into three different codes. 10065 will cover East 61st through East 68th streets, 10075 from East 77th to East 80th, and East 69th through East 76th will retain 10021. The population in the area had grown so much the post office ran out of plus four codes in the area.

Pam Liebman, CEO of Corcoran Group Real Estate isn't to worried about the change, even though her company will have to change it's own letterhead to 10065.

LIEBMAN: Well I think it's just more cocktail party chatter, you know, something to laugh about. Make fun of your neighbors if they are being kicked out of the 10021, but nothing really serious, and nothing thats going to have any long term effect on the New York City real estate market.

REPORTER: The US Postal Service said the changes will provide a more efficient way to deliver mail along these routes. And residents of the former 10021 don't need to stress about changing every piece of letterhead before July 1st, they will still receive mail for their former zip code, it just may take a little longer to get there.
