Former Council Aide Escorted from City Hall

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Things were tense just before yesterday's City Council meeting as the former Chief of Staff for Councilman Charles Barron was escorted out of council chambers by police.

REPORTER: Council Speaker Christine Quinn says Viola Plummer had no right to be there since she was fired for allegedly threatening another councilman. Plummer says Quinn's actions were illegal.

PLUMMER: So therefore everything that proceeds from that is illegal. And so when she says I can't sit on the floor, it is just like Bo Conner. Remember? You can't sit in the front of the bus.

REPORTER: Quinn had asked Plummer to sign a letter saying she would "conduct herself appropriately in the future" and not be "disruptive in the council chambers" if she wanted to keep her job, but Plummer refused.

REPORTER: Plummer says she now volunteers for Barron and has a right to be on the chamber floor during meetings. She says she'll be back next month for the Council's next meeting.
