Giuliani Apologizes for Comments on Ground Zero Workers

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Republican Presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani says he misspoke when he compared himself to 9/11 rescue workers.

REPORTER: The former New York City mayor upset some police officers and firefighters Thursday, when he told reporters that he spent as much time at ground zero as the workers, and was exposed to the same health risks. Battalion Chief John McConnell, president of the Fire Officers' Association, says it's another example of Giuliani trying to build on his September 11th reputation.

MCDONNELL: This is the only platform this man has to run on and he continues to try to perpetuate it with story after story -- or I should say fable after fable -- regarding his leadership, or so-called leadership, at the site.

REPORTER: Giuliani told radio host Mike Gallagher that his goal was to show empathy for first responders.
