Schumer Says Gonzalez Did Right by Stepping Down

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

New York Senator Charles Schumer says Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez has done the right thing by stepping down. Schumer, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has long criticized Gonzalez. He says he was not surprised by Gonzalez' resignation, only by how long it took.

SCHUMER:It was clear to anyone who watched even five minutes of the hearings that he was doing everything he could to avoid telling the truth. It was clear when you looked at all the facts of the attorney's who were fired that something was really rotten.

REPORTER: Schumer says he's confident Democrats can work with the Bush Administration to find a qualified replacement. Pundits are saying the president is likely to nominate Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff.

Gonzalez announced his resignation this morning. He will officially step down on September 17.
