Midtown Hospital Closes, First of Many
New York, NY —
Saint Vincent’s Midtown Hospital will shut its doors this week.
REPORTER: It'll be the first medical center to shut close down as a result of the state’s hospital closure commission. Pharmacy Director Angelo Illuzzi has worked there 27 years.
ILLUZZI: This place was always a big family place - if you're here 27 years or 27 minutes. It never leaves you. It stays with you for the rest of your life. When everybody works together, it makes the day go very smoothly, regardless of all the trials and tribulations you go through.
REPORTER: The 250-bed facility is closing because the state commission determined its services could be performed more efficiently by other more financially stable hospitals nearby. Closing the hospital will reportedly cost $100 million, by the time all debts are paid off. Closing could occur as soon as next month.
