Obama Visits New Jersey for Fundraiser

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Barack Obama dropped by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark yesterday for a low-budget fundraiser. Students paid $15, others paid $25 to hear what the Illinois senator had to say. Jen Poyant reports.

Newarkers of all ages came out for to support the candidate for president. Obama had been spending much of his recent time in New Hampshire, but made a special stop in New Jersey to help strengthening his grass roots support. And even though it was not a sell out crowd, Obama left no stone unturned in his stump speech. While covering high profile issues like health care, the economy, education and energy. He also pointed out he was the candidate to bring diverse supporters together, sometimes in unexpected ways.

OBAMA: They whisper to me, "Barack, I'm a Republican and I support you." And I say, "Thank you, but why are we whispering?" You can come out, there are Republicans for Obama. There's nothing to fear.

The Newark event coincided with the opening of 2 new Obama campaign offices in West Orange and Montclair. For WNYC, I'm Jen Poyant in Newark, New Jersey.
